With Blue Monday only just passed – (and I’m talking about the saddest day of the year, not the good Yo Sushi kind), we all have one of these days sometimes when you’re down and stuck in a rut, and nothing can seem to pull you out of it. The start of the year hasn’t been brilliant for me, you may have noticed that I haven’t been uploading as regularly as I normally do, and I can promise that that will soon return, it’s just not been a great month personal wise and I apologise for that, but things can only look up!

The thing about bad days, or bad time periods, is that sometimes only you can get yourselves out of them. Being human is messy, and complicated, but everything will always always be ok in the end, and the problems that you have now – in a month, a year, ten, will feel so insignificant.

Here are some tips below that allow you to have some time to yourself, to escape a little bit and to recharge and reflect. I always feel guilty about having a proper proper day off, but we’re human and we don’t need to justify taking time out for ourselves. 

Go for a walk without your phone.

You’d really be surprised how relieving it is to be outdoors, away from social media, having time to just breathe and reflect.

Exercise for 20 minutes.

Pilates, Yoga. Whatever your poison is, take 20 minutes to focus all of your attention onto your body.  

Read a book.

Books are there for us to escape in, whether it be novels, or self-help. Get yourself lost.

Watch ASMR.

I know that for me, especially on a night if I’m finding trouble sleeping because I’m stressed, this really helps me to unwind.

Have a warm shower, or bath. 

I’m talking your nicest shower gel, bath bombs, hair masks, the lot.

Light a scented candle. 

Get cosy, and light a candle and just relax.

Have a pamper morning.

Moisturise, paint your nails, try out a face mask. Treat yourself and really focus on the days to come, not the days passed.

Watch some guilty pleasures.

And I mean it – Ghost Adventures, Dance Moms, cute videos of dogs. Go for it.

Listen to a podcast.

Whether it’s a Ted talk, self-help, or true crime. Play a podcast that interest you, and focus your attention onto other things.

Wear comfy clothes. 

You bet I mean go braless.

Cuddle your pet. 

It’s surprising the amount of endorphins made from just cuddling something, or someone.

Tidy your room.

I always find it therapeutic for me. Tidy room, tidy mind and all that.  

Write a list of things in your life that you are grateful for. 

I didn’t use to find this helpful but lately I’m seeing the appeal. It’s harder to feel hard done by, when there’s a list of things that you have that people elsewhere could never dream of.

Drink a cup of tea.

(Or in my case way too much milk and sugar with a hint of tea).

Have a cry, let it all out. It’s ok.

It really is ok not to be ok.

Call a family member. 

Rant, vent, put it all out there. Family are there for the bad times.

Put fresh sheets on your bed. 

You know the feeling.

Hydrate, make sure you’re drinking enough water. 

Water makes you feel energised, clears your head and looks after your body.

Listen to music. 

Just let yourself go for a little bit.

Watch Friends or something nostalgic.

In my case definitely Friends. Could I BE any more clearer? (Terrible).

Have a nap. 

Make sure that you’re having enough sleep, bad days are rubbish enough, take care of yourself.

Everyone is so different but whatever makes you calm and works for you, do it, and do it unashamedly. You don’t need permission to have a day focused on healing yourself.
